KDG Construction Consulting is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to support construction quality assurance for large-scale infrastructure projects. This role is responsible for ensuring that all mechanical and plumbing installations comply with project plans, specifications, and state and local building codes. The Mechanical Inspector helps maintain consistent quality standards, supports the verification of contractor work, and ensures the safety and integrity of complex mechanical systems. This position plays a key role in identifying deficiencies, tracking field progress, and coordinating between contractors and oversight teams. The Mechanical Inspector will work closely with project stakeholders to ensure all aspects of construction meet required standards within a high-stakes, large-scale infrastructure environment.
Position Summary: The Mechanical Inspector provides technical oversight for a variety of infrastructure improvements and utility projects. This role requires a thorough knowledge of materials and methods used in HVAC, plumbing, heating, and refrigeration installations. The inspector is responsible for comprehensive daily reporting and must possess current ICC certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector. The Mechanical Inspector plays a critical role in ensuring contractor compliance with national codes and agency-specific standards, contributing to the successful delivery of significant public works and commercial building projects. This is a full-time position that may require various shifts (day, swing, or night) based on construction schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Inspections:
• Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of mechanical and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects.
• Verify installations of HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork), domestic water, sewage, venting, and gas piping.
• Inspect fire and life safety integration, including smoke control systems, smoke dampers, and FM-200 suppression systems.
• Monitor underground utilities and mechanical ventilation/exhaust systems.
• Oversee mechanical and plumbing shutdowns and ensure strict adherence to lockout/tagout procedures.
Compliance & Documentation:
• Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports documenting the Who, What, When, Where, and How of all observed construction activities.
• Ensure accuracy and accountability in tracking progress and identifying issues, deficiencies, or safety concerns in a timely manner.
• Review and interpret construction documents, including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
• Verify contractor compliance with local and national mechanical and plumbing codes (CBC & CMC).
Project Support:
• Track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities.
• Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.
• Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers and third-party agencies as needed.
• Review commissioning and balancing reports to ensure system performance and adherence to standards.
Qualifications:
Required:
• 3+ years of experience performing mechanical inspections for building construction.
• Current ICC Certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector.
• Proof of Cal-OSHA 30 hr. training completed within the last 4 years.
• Ability to obtain required site-specific security badging prior to official start.
• Proficiency in Project Management Information Software (e.g., Bluebeam, Adobe Pro, PMWeb, Microsoft Office).
Preferred:
• Additional current ICC certification as a Commercial Plumbing Inspector.
• Experience with large-scale commercial, industrial, or public infrastructure buildings.
• NFPA 70E standards training and Confined Space Entry training.
• Plumbing experience (journeyman/master level) with progression into inspection.

Anticipated Salary Range: $118,000.00 – $130,000.00 per year
