KDG Construction Consulting is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to support our construction inspection team in a high-priority, large-scale infrastructure environment. The Mechanical Inspector acts as a critical member of the team, ensuring that all work meets required standards and contractor schedules are met safely and efficiently. This position requires a dedicated professional capable of working within an active, operating environment to ensure the successful delivery of complex construction projects.

Position Summary:
The Mechanical Inspector is responsible for conducting comprehensive inspections of mechanical and plumbing systems to ensure compliance with applicable codes and project specifications. This role requires a professional with a thorough knowledge of the materials and methods used in the installation of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The successful candidate must be open to learning prescriptive items required by the agency and demonstrate excellence in documenting field activities.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Inspection & Quality Assurance:
• Conduct comprehensive daily inspections of mechanical and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects.
• Inspect domestic water and sewage systems, venting, fire sprinklers, gas piping, and HVAC systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, ductwork).
• Oversee mechanical ventilation, exhaust, and fire/life safety integration, including smoke dampers and FM-200 suppression systems.
• Verify contractor compliance with local and national mechanical and plumbing codes.
• Review and interpret construction documents including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and change orders.
• Support special inspections and testing activities, coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies.
• Perform inspections of underground utilities and fire life safety systems including smoke/heat detectors.
• Monitor commissioning and balancing reports and oversee mechanical/plumbing shutdowns and lockout/tagout procedures.

Documentation & Project Controls:
• Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports that clearly document the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of all observed construction activities.
• Ensure accuracy, clarity, and accountability in tracking progress and identifying issues, deficiencies, or safety concerns in a timely manner.
• Track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities.
• Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests based on an approved schedule of values.

Collaboration & Leadership:
• Identify and address deficiencies, ensuring all aspects of construction meet the required standards.
• Maintain excellent working relationships geared toward open communication and mutual problem-solving.
• Work with contractors and engineers to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations on significant construction projects.

Qualifications
Required:
• Experience: 3+ years or more experience performing mechanical inspections for Building Construction.
• Certification: Current ICC certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector (Required to apply).
• Safety Training: Proof of Cal-OSHA 30 hr. training within the last 4 years.
• Specialized Training: Fall protection and harness training.
• Technical Skills: Knowledge of Project Management Information Software (PM Web, Bluebeam, Adobe Pro, Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word).
• Education: High school diploma (or equivalent).
• Shift Flexibility: Must be able to work any assigned shift—day, swing, or night—and modified schedules, including nights and weekends, as dictated by project schedules.

Preferred:
• Additional current ICC certification as a Commercial Plumbing Inspector.
• NFPA 70E standards training within the last 3 years.
• Plumbing experience (journeyman/master level) with progression into inspection.
• Experience inspecting mechanical systems of large-scale commercial, industrial, or public buildings.
• Confined Space Entry Training.
• Experience overseeing compliance on significant construction projects and involvement in complex projects requiring coordination with multiple stakeholders (contractors, engineers, city officials).

Core Competencies:
• Thorough knowledge of materials and methods used in mechanical and refrigeration installations.
• A strong understanding of diverse code requirements (CBC & CMC).
• Excellent communication and time management skills.
• Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies to ensure compliance.
• Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic equipment for contract documents with minimal supervision.

Anticipated Salary Range: $124,000.00 – $135,000.00 per year
